Goals for 2011

A new year is here.  It is time to set goals and  plan the next twelve months of your life.  Goal setting is something most adults do at the beginning of the year.  This is hard enough when you are single and do not have to be concerned with other people’s goals and needs.

Many of us have others who depend on us as part of a family unit.  Get each person in the family to set personal goals for the new year.  Then, link each person’s personal goals into family goals.  Each member of the family can help the others reach personal goals so that family goals can be achieved as well. 

A common challenge in families is when each individual’s goals pull them away from the family.  Instead,  keep the family focused on the most important goal of all, a strong family.

Goals can take us away from our Responsibilities if we do not include them in the planning process...

Peak Training for All Ages

 Have you ever wondered why the Center’s classes are designed to be either 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length? After tedious research and over 25+ years of experience teaching martial arts to student’s of all ages, the instructors at the Center have found that lengthy workout times do not always mean extra knowledge.

Medical research backs the fact that students training in martial arts, which require fine motor skills and complex movements of the whole body, need between 30 minutes to 60 minutes to train on new skills. To adequately retain these skills, students must experience at least a 6 hour lapse in time and then come back to repeat the same sequence again. Martial Arts not only involves learning new skills like self-defense technique, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission moves, it also requires strength and conditioning training. Just like weight lifters must rest their bodies between workouts to increase strength upon their next strength training session, so do students of the martial arts. Because the body is in a process of repair after a workout, there must be a period of rest between workouts. A decrease in strength and conditioning occurs when the muscles of the body cannot be repaired after continuous use. Classes with children between ages 3—5 should be kept fast paced and fun. According to the American Heritage Desk Dictionary, the word apprentice is defined as “one learning a trade under a skilled master; or a beginner.” I find both of these definitions to be relevant to the work I do each day, as well as the way I think about apprenticeship in relation to the remediation of autism spectrum disorders or related neurological disorders. Apprenticeship in job training has been around for hundreds of years, dating back to the middle ages.
